The four cornerstones of great office health habits

This is, in essence, the second part of an article we recently published on how to ‘Kickstart 2022 with great office health habits!’ In this article, we spoke about the necessity of developing good health habits in your daily office work routine to enable you to work better, more productively and with more energy and sustained enthusiasm. In this follow up article we give you the practical steps to attain this – these are the four cornerstones of great office health habits!

Are you Suffering some common office fatigue symptoms?

Are you suffering from back pain, hip pain, sore feet, swollen ankles, eye or mental fatigue? The list is endless. If you have nodded in agreement with at least one of the symptoms mentioned, then it is time to start taking care of your own health and wellness too or your work and quality thereof will be affected. This, in the long run, affects your clients, your reputation, your bank balance, and the quality of your life!

So what do we need to do?

1.   Adopt good posture and positioning –Maintaining good posture and the correct positioning of the desk is absolutely essential. Ergonomically designed office furniture that assists with height, wrist and back support are all a part of this and the correct height and positioning of the keypad and screen (ensuring the screen is directly in front of you at head height with no glare behind it) will all protect your posture and your eyes.

2.  Get regular exercise and do office stretches – Get into the habit at work of stretching and taking regular breaks to do so, also get up and walk around, thereby resting your eyes and getting out of the seated position. Exercises away from work that is gentle, yet so effective, are Pilates and Yoga. Combine these with some mild resistance exercises to ensure your bones and muscles stay strong too.

3.  Eat well and stay hydrated – Always eat a good breakfast containing some protein before work and take regular snack breaks (with the right energy foods, like energy bars, fruit, or nuts) at least every 2 to 3 hours. This helps to maintain your blood sugar levels and prevents fatigue. Also essentially, stay well hydrated. It is recommended that a healthy adult should drink a minimum of 3 litres of liquids a day, with the bulk of this being just pure water!

4.  Take vacations and get sufficient sleep –Take vacations on a regular basis and whatever you do take your usual day or two off per week to recharge your batteries. Overwork can have the opposite effect on productivity if the body stops functioning properly due to burnout. Also, get consistently good rest in the evenings by trying to get at least 7 to 8 hrs of sleep.
